On Saturday, July 19, 2025, the Ghanaian-Canadian Association of Calgary (GCAC) hosted the second annual GCAC Summerfest at Murdock Park in Calgary. Building on the success of its debut, this year’s event brought even more energy, community participation, and cultural pride to the heart of the city.
Murdock Park, located in the Bridgeland neighborhood, was transformed into a hub of color, rhythm, and togetherness. Families, friends, and supporters of all backgrounds gathered under the summer sun to celebrate Ghanaian heritage and the growing presence of the community in Calgary.
The park featured vendor booths showcasing Ghanaian cuisine, crafts, and community services. Attendees could sample classic dishes like jollof rice, kelewele, grilled tilapia, and waakye, while exploring handmade items and informational tables from local businesses and cultural organizations.
One of the most anticipated highlights of the day was the live band performance flown in from Toronto. Their high-energy sound blended traditional Ghanaian rhythms with contemporary flair, drawing a crowd to the front of the stage. The band’s presence symbolized not just entertainment but the bridging of Ghanaian communities across Canada—from Toronto to Calgary.
Cultural dance performances brought the crowd to life. Troupes dressed in traditional kente and African prints took turns showcasing drumming, dancing, and storytelling passed down through generations. Young children joined elders in the rhythms, highlighting the event’s focus on intergenerational celebration and learning.
Workshops and participatory activities added to the richness of the day. From traditional games to community art, there was something for every age group to engage with and enjoy.
This year marked only the second edition of GCAC’s Summerfest, but the momentum is undeniable. Compared to last year, attendance increased, vendor participation expanded, and the overall experience was smoother and more vibrant. The GCAC leadership team, volunteers, and community members came together to create a memorable event that’s quickly becoming a staple of Calgary’s summer calendar.
