2019 GCAC Scholarships

  1. Number and Types of Awards
    There are 7 awards: 5 awards worth $1,000 each and 2 awards worth $500 each.

    • 3 Awards
      • First Year Tertiary Institution Student Scholarships:
        • 1 award worth $1,000.
        • 1 award worth $500 from the “Be the Change Humanitarian Award sponsored by Dr Kudjawu” for a male student of Ghanaian lineage.
        • 1 award worth $500 from the “Be the Change Humanitarian Award sponsored by Dr Kudjawu” for a female student of Ghanaian lineage.
        • 1 Award Non-University Tertiary Institution Student Scholarship (e.g. for Students from recognised Technical and Trade Schools) worth $1,000.
        • 2 Awards Undergraduate University Student Scholarships worth $1,000 each.
        • 1 Award Graduate Student Scholarship worth $1,000 each.
  2. Eligibility Criteria
    The scholarships listed here are open to everyone with direct or no connection to the Ghanaian-Canadian Association of Calgary and meets the criteria set for each category.

    • General Eligibility Criteria
      • Applicants or their families or guardians must be resident in Calgary and surrounding areas within Alberta and have demonstrated a genuine desire of participating in the Ghanaian culture and heritage.
      • Education: Applicants must have proof of attending a tertiary educational institution recognized in Canada. Proof may include (but is not limited to) Letters of enrolment, Letters of Registration and tuition receipts.
    • Specific Eligibility Criteria
      • First Year Tertiary Institution Student Scholarships
        • Applicants must be in their 1st year of a tertiary educational Institution in the calendar year of application.
        • Applicants must have a minimum of 75 as the average marks in all subjects combined in Grade 12.
        • Applicants must have proof of enrollment into a tertiary institution.
      • Non-University Post-Secondary Institution Student Scholarships (e.g. Trade and Technical Schools)
        • Applicants must be enrolled in a Non-University Post-Secondary Institution (e.g. Trade and Technical Schools).
        • Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 at some point in time in the calendar year of application.
      • Undergraduate University Student Scholarships
        • Applicants must be enrolled in an Undergraduate program.
        • Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 at some point in time in the calendar year of application.
      • Graduate Student Scholarships
        • Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate program in a tertiary educational institution in Canada.
        • Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 at some point in time in the calendar year of application.
  3. Award Guidelines: Criteria, Processes and Timelines
    • Guidelines: General Award Criteria
      • Volunteering: Higher preference would be given to candidates who actively volunteer for both the Ghanaian Community and the General Community (e.g. Calgary, Alberta, Canada).
      • Extracurricular activities: Higher Preference would be given to candidates who are involved in extracurricular activities within or outside their educational institution.
      • Academic success: Higher preference would be given to either of these candidates:
        • Candidates who have made a significant improvement in their grades relative to the previous term/semester.
        • Candidates with higher grades.
    • Awardees Selection Process: How Awardees are selected from Eligible Applicants
      • Applicant’s submitted documents shall be reviewed and if necessary, applicants shall be interviewed.
    • Application Process
      • Submit official transcripts or grade reports: At least 1 report but preferably 2 as follows:
        • Applicants must submit the most recent transcripts or grade reports available.
        • Applicants should also consider submitting the transcript or grade report immediately prior to the most recent report.
      • Submit Proof of tuition (i.e. invoice or receipt).
      • Submit CV
      • For First Year Tertiary Institution Student Scholarships: Also submit any proof of enrollment/acceptance into a tertiary institution.
      • For “Be the Change Humanitarian Award”: Also submit any proof of Ghanaian lineage including (but not limited to): copy of applicant’s Ghanaian ID or copy applicant’s parent’s Ghanaian ID.

    • Application Deadline
      • The deadline for the applications is: 30th September 2019.
    • Notification
      • Only shortlisted applicants will be notified. Winners will be announced in March, 2020.
